| Our experience is that children remember concepts best when they are taught in engaging and challenging ways. At Germantown Friends School, we are constantly integrating hands-on experience into the curriculum. Whether it's cooking, trips, performances, community service, or on-line education, we bring excitement to learning! Parents and guests often bring their talents into the classroom, so that children are constantly introduced to unique and enriching experiences.

Second graders give from the heart. A mound of toys purchased by second graders from their own allowances awaits transport to a local shelter. Students enjoy trolling the aisles of a local toy store for gifts they know others will enjoy for the holidays. This is just one of the many ways GFS classes engage in service to the greater Germantown community and the world. |

There is nothing like field exploration to bring the study of birds directly to students. Third grade science students take a trip to a local arboretum to study local native birds. Not only do students learn how tricky it is to identify birds from fleeting glimpses, they learn that patience and quiet pay off when studying animals in their habitat. |

Students listen to George Washington talk about his experiences living through the 1793 yellow fever epidemic in the Deshler-Morris House, now a National Historic Site adjacent to the GFS property. By asking questions of a "historical figure" students solidify the knowledge gained in the classroom. |

Social studies comes alive in the form of a multi legged dragon celebrating the Chinese New Year. As part of their study of China, first graders parade from the Nursery to the Upper School delighting students, teachers, and office workers all over the school. The children later retire the dragon and settle in for an authentic Chinese meal. |
