In a game that was played with high levels of intensity and skill, the boys varsity soccer team tied Penn Charter on Friday at home. Teo Zurares, who played very well all day, threaded a pass through to Mbizo Mzamane with 3 minutes gone in the second half, and Mbizo beat the PC goalie for the GFS goal. About 7 minutes later, a PC player took a free kick and blasted a shot that ricocheted off of one of our players for a goal that goalie John Barstow had no chance to stop. We had many good chances on the day, far more than PC, and our players played with heart, skill and courage all game. Within the last 15 minutes of the game, we had 4 plays that were dangerous chances: Mbizo sent a cross that Brian Pepe-Mooney hit just wide; Mbizo hit another cross that David Robb, flying down the left side, barely missed heading towards goal; Henry Robb, just a few yards from goal, sent a ball over the crossbar; and with a minute or so to go, Phil Jones broke in on the right side and crossed the ball in close quarters, only to have the ball smothered by the goalie.
We played very well and showed great improvement from our previous game on Tuesday. Sophomores Henry Robb, Phil Jones, Marek Loder and Teo Zuares played their best games of the season, winning loose balls, contesting furiously all game long and creating many dangerous chances. Brian Pepe-Mooney continued to play wonderfully on both offense and defense, playing all 80 minutes in his typical determined, disciplined manner. Barstow in goal was reliable and inspiring, and Zach Barrett, Nick Malinowski and Evan Cantu-Hertzler were steady, strong defenders all day long.
We play GA away on Tuesday, then play next Saturday at home against St. Andrews. If we keep improving like this, we'll be tough to beat and fun to watch!
