Boys Basketball Pushes Chestnut Hill Academy
December 15, 2007

A shorthanded GFS Boys Basketball Team gave Chestnut Hill Academy all it could handle for two and a half quarters, but came up short dropping a 62-45 decision at CHA on Saturday.

Playing for the second straight game without junior captain Rasheed Stewart, and without sophomore Dom Reed (who suffered a minor concussion in practice on Thursday), GFS suited up only 10 players for the game, four of whom also had to play in the JV game earlier on Saturday.

To the credit of the players, the Tigers came out with tremendous energy and focus, and brought a high level of intensity onto the floor as they took on their former coach, Bill Dooley, and a very talented CHA team (a team that already defeated both FCS and Shipley convincingly this season by 24 points each).  Putting together their best half of basketball on the year, GFS trailed by only one after the first quarter, and by only 3 points at half, 30-27.

Coming out even for the first few minutes of the third quarter, CHA extended its defense and used a full court press to effectively speed up the game and wear down the Tigers, slowly pulling away to take a 14 point lead into the 4th quarter.  GFS continued to fight and put together a string of baskets in the final frame, but did not have enough left to pull any closer to the host team.

Wes Bill had another outstanding game, finishing as the overall high scorer, with 26 points, and played a tough, smart game on both ends of the floor.  Max deLone, Nick Mraz, Sam Mercuris and Jason Symonette stepped up their games and intensity, playing the bulk of minutes in the first half, while Luke Sand brought fresh energy and hustle off the bench, helping to keep the Tigers close in the first half.  Mike Gibbs and Jordan Monroe also contributed off the bench.

GFS is now 4-4 on the season, and welcomes Wilmington Friends School (DE) on Tuesday for a 3:45pm start in the Scattergood Gym and then will travel to Episcopal Academy on Thursday for their final game before the break.

Thank you to all the supportive and vocal fans who traveled to CHA on Saturday and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday!
