Last week the GFS Boys' cross country program captured their 7th straight FSL title and 3rd straight PA Independent State title. A strong JV squad swept the FSL JV race for the 3rd straight year and the PA Independent State JV race for the 2nd year in a row.
The FSL Championships were held at Westtown on Tuesday, October 21st. The Tigers finished 1st with 31 points behind juniors Gus McKenzie (2nd, 16:30), Tom Waterman (5th, 17:04), and Ross Wistar (7th, 17:22). Evan Caldwell (8th, 17:32) and Fenn Hoffman (9th, 17:37) rounded out the scoring 5 ahead of 2nd place Friends' Central. Sam Butler (13th, 18:05) and Zhewen Zhang (15th, 18:16) finished in the top 15 to complete the varsity 7.
GFS dominated the JV race at the FSL championships by taking the top 12 places to finish 1st with 15 points. Sam Ebert earned his first championship victory, winning in a time of 18:05. The first place team title was secured by Eddie Einbender-Luks (2nd, 18:17), Caleb Rau (3rd, 18:22), Henry Blood (4th, 18:27), and James Kelly (5th, 18:50).
At Mercersburg Academy on Saturday, October 25th the Tigers raced to their 3rd straight PA Independent State team title with 49 points. Gus McKenzie led the way with a 2nd place finish in 16:10 to post the 4th fastest all-time time at the PA Independent Championships. Tom Waterman also earned first team all state recognition finishing in 7th place with a time of 16:32 while Ross Wistar earned 2nd team all-state honors finishing in 9th place at 16:48. Rounding out the top 5 were sophomores Evan Caldwell (15th, 17:04) and David Waterman (16th, 17:12). Fenn Hoffman (20th, 17:22) and Sam Butler (28th, 17:52) completed the top 7.
In the JV race, the Tigers had a clean sweep of the top 8 places and 13 of the top 14 places to unofficially win with 15 points for the second straight year. The performance would have earned them 6th place in the varsity competition. Drew Daniels smashed his personal best to win the JV race in 17:52 while Eddie Einbender-Luks took second with the same time of 17:52. The top 5 was completed by Sam Ebert (3rd, 18:07), Henry Blood (4th, 18:12), Caleb Rau (5th, 18:28). Sophomores Sam Korus (6th, 18:35) and Zhewen Zhang (7th, 18:36) rounded out the scoring 7 for GFS. Big personal bests were run by Reuben Wilson (8th, 18:40), Charlie McClelland (12th, 18:59), Nick Dye (14th, 19:04), and Kyle Musto (24th, 20:36).
