| GFS Baseball - 2009 FSL Champs!!! May 16, 2009 |
| On Saturday afternoon, the #1 seed GFS Tigers defeated the #2 seed Moorestown Friends by a score of 5-3 to capture the 2009 Friends Schools League Championship. The victory also marks the 6th consecutive title earned by the GFS baseball program.
The Tigers seized momentum early in the contest scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. After Jason Symonette drew a leadoff walk, he would come around and score the games first run on an RBI double by Jesse Biddle. Ben Rogers then ripped an RBI single to plate Biddle and up the Tiger advantage to 2-0. After a double by Rasheed Stewart put runners on 2nd and 3rd, Josh Goldenberg lifted a sacrifice fly to plate the 3rd Tiger run of the inning.
With the score remaining 3-0, the Tigers added to their lead with a run in the 3rd inning. Rasheed Stewart laced the 2nd of his two doubles on the day and scored on a 2-out base hit off the bat of Jay Query. Moorestown Friends would get on the board in the 4th after a leadoff single that eventually scored. MFS would again threaten in the 5th plating one run but would strand two runners on base to end the inning.
The Tigers would score their final run in the 5th when Rasheed Stewart delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Gilman Myran to push the lead to 5-2. MFS would push across another run in the 7th but it would not be enough as groundout ended the ballgame clinching the title for the Tigers.
On the mound, Reiss Clauson-Wolf pitched a solid 4 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Clauson-Wolf scattered 5 hits, allowed only one walk, and struck out 3 batters. In relief, Tyler Clauson-Wolf pitched only 1/3 of inning but stranded two MFS base runners in inducing an inning ending groundout to help preserve the GFS lead. Jesse Biddle earned the save for the Tigers as he pitched the final six outs.
The Tigers season will continue as they participate in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament this upcoming Tuesday. The #10 seeded Tigers will hit the road and face the #7 seed Haverford School. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. | |
