Girls Track & Field win 6th FSL Title in a row
May 16, 2009

The Girls Track and Field team traveled to Westtown on Saturday to defend their Friends School League title. The Tigers, who historically have had a significant advantage, were closely matched by George School.  Every race was hard fought and every point mattered.  It was truly a team effort.  The day started out with a JV 400 and a JV 1600, where the Lady Tigers set the tone for the day.

Senior Taya Friedan earned big points early in the day vaulting 9’0 beating her own school record and setting a new league record.  Senior Jasmine West was a double winner winning  the triple jump in  32’08.5  and the 100 M Hurdles in 16.64.  She also placed 4th in the long jump and 5th in the 300 M hurdles.

Junior Jasia Kaulbach won the 1600 M in 5:16, and the 3200 M in 12:09:12, tallying 16 solid points for the GFS girls.  Senior Madeline Hawes secured a first place finish in the 800 M in 2:22, and finished 3rd in the Triple Jump with a jump of 29’04.75.

Senior Nina Voith crushed her competition running her first 400 of the season, finishing in 1:00.30 an took second in the long jump with a jump of 14’09.5.

We had gusty performances all around the track and the field events provided many needed points.  The Tigers went into the 400 M down 23 points, with just 4 events to go.  Instead of giving up, the girls fought harder and earned 8 points in the 400, 1 point in the 200 and 14 points in the 3200 meters.  When the pole vault was scored GFS was up by 4 points, and only the 4x400 to go.  Freshmen Carey Celata, who had also raced in the 800, 1600, and thrown the javelin started the race, and put the Tigers in position just behind George School and Friends Central.  When junior Alfia White took the baton, she immediately made a move, and the Tigers never looked back.  Sophomore Brooke Palus and Senior Madeline Hawes worked to establish position so far ahead of our opponents it was clear the GFS Girls Track team would win their 6th consecutive Friends League Title by a margin of only 7 points.  Adding to the excitement of the win was the fact that our 4x400 team beat the League Record in the event finishing in 4:11.14.

The season was one of many challenges for the team, but in the end, we had the determination and guts to pull out a win.  We will miss seniors Annie Tickell, Cheyenne Morgan, Madeline Hawes, Jasmine West, Emma Crimm, Katherine Celata, Kendra Mayberry, Taya Friedan, Nina Voith, and  Jen Berger.  We wish them the best of luck as they continue their journey to college.
