Girls Lacrosse Defends their Title!

The varsity lacrosse team finished the season with a 14-4 record, staying undefeated 9-0 in the FSL.  The team dominated in both playoff game, winning Semi's over Westtown 19-6 and Finals over Shipley 15-7.  In our 9 league games GFS outscored their opponents 133-66.

On Championship Saturday the team came to play, they were focused from the minute that they stepped onto the field until the last whistle blew- they took nothing for granted and did not falter once during the game.  Samie Francis, our goalkeeper, was stellar in the cage- tallying 16 saves and squashing any and all of Shipley's efforts to gain momentum.

The GFS defense, led by seniors Camilla Warren and Avery Williamson playing in tandem with Shelby Tucker and Ava Samuels, was quick, tough and more organized than ever!  The low defenders were aggressive and worked together - double-teaming any attacker trying to get near the goal- they wreaked havoc and caused turnovers which they swiftly delivered to our midfielders (Betsy Sachs-6 goals, 1 assist; Lydia Kring- 4 goals; Iris Williamson- 3 goals).

Shipley could not find a matchup to stop any of our midfielders, let alone all three of these talented players.  The Shipley defense was spread too thin, trying to guard all of our threatening players- when their defenders dropped to the ball, the GFS low attackers took advantage by always being in the right spot.  The Tigers gained a 9-3 halftime advantage.

The attackers- Sierra Carter-Gordon, Lucy Rabinowitz (1 goal), Annie Morrissey (1 goal), Lyles Swift-Farley and Lydie McKenzie (2 assists) were quick to gain the ball back if Shipley happened to come up with possession.  They pressured as if they were seasoned defenders, which made all the difference in the pace of the game.  Shipley had no breathing room and was unable to mount a counter-attack.  GFS continued to dominate in the second half and played like champions, never letting Shipley feel like they could get back into the game, the game finished with a 15-7 score on the board and many smiles across the field.

It was an honor to coach this great group of athletes, every single player improved and should be commended for their dedication.  Each day, the girls came out to practice eager to try new skills and push each other to the limit.  I would like to thank our awesome coaching staff (Catherine, Liz, Christina and Nicole) for always looking at the game creatively and sharing their passion for lacrosse with the players each day!

Congratulations to the three seniors- Avery, Camilla and Lydia- they were strong leaders throughout and set out early in the season for another championship and achieved their goal!  GFS lax will miss you next year - our squad will continue to cultivate the positive team spirit that you worked so hard to build.
