| GFS Tennis Sweeps Westtown
|
| October 22, 2009 GFS 5, Westtown 0 "Our tennis season started off with some pretty brawny competition," said head coach Jessica Smith.. "We had the heavy hitters fairly early on and it's helped everyone's game throughout the season.. Today's match was no different and GFS came out on top."
GFS won 62 games today compared to Westtown's 39.
First doubles Sharell Bryant and Daisy Daeschler (Seniors) came off the court with victory first at 6-4/6-4. "They played cohesively and confidently. Their opponents were looking for holes for winners on their shots but found none. Sharell was lobbing them as if it was her job and Daisy kept a calm head and waited for winners without trying to force them," said Smith.
Next to come off of the courts Jenna Goldstein (Junior) won her match at 6-2/6-4. "She played a left-handed player today and it didn't phase her to the point that she wasn't even aware she was playing a lefty. Their long rallies were usually finished off with Jenna's lethal backhand striking a winner."
Lauren Shinn (Freshman) and Shenara Musthaq (Junior) toyed with their opponents today. "They sat back and waited to find the perfect weaknesses in their opposing players and exploited every one." Lauren played the back of the court and hit these high bouncing deep landing lobs and her opponent would try to match her hit for hit. "Eventually the Westtown player would hit one ball not deep enough and Shenara would gobble it up and spit it out at net." They won 6-4/6-3.
Smith noted, "Something clicked in Anna Bezahler (Freshman) today. She had amazing footwork and racquet preparation throughout her entire match. Anywhere the ball went, Anna was there. She won 7-5/6-4."
Haley Abbott (Sophomore) was the last match to finish. She won her first set 6-2. "Wearing sunglasses and baseball hat the hot shining sun we saw briefly today didn't stop her. She tapped the racquet, denoting that she was ready for serves and shuffled her feet like a Tiger in a cage. Westtown had plans for that second set, but Haley was trying to stop them from being carried out. With both teams cheering on their players from the sidelines and that sun slowly disappearing Haley went into a tiebreaker for the second set. At this point both players were tired. Their rallies would go at least 12 hits and Haley's opponent couldn't call the ball loudly as she was out of breath. But Haley wasn't short of breath. She won the tiebreaker 7-5."
