Tigers Baseball Advances to FSL Championship

May 19, 2010

In a Friends Schools League Semifinal matchup, the GFS Varsity Baseball team defeated visting Westtown by a score of 6-2. The win advances the Tigers to this Saturday's FSL Championship where they will face Shipley who defeated Friends Central to advance. The win improves the Tigers overall record to 17-7 on the season.  [The championship game will be held at GFS Playing Fields, 2823 Midvale Ave, Saturday May 22 at Noon.]

GFS scored the games first run in the 2nd inning when Jay Query's RBI single plated Nick Rittler to give GFS the 1-0 lead. The Tigers stretched their lead in the 3rd to 4-0 when hits by Tyler Clauson-Wolf, Jason Symonette, Justin Berg, and Jesse Biddle led to 3 runs. The final two runs were scored in the 4th when Tyler Clauson-Wolf and Jason Symonette scored on a Dan Ceisler fielder's choice and a Ben Rogers RBI single.

Head Coach Bob Bergholtz said, "The story of the day, however, had to be the pitching performance of Jesse Biddle." Biddle threw 5 innings facing 15 batters and struck out all 15 that came to the plate. He needed only 68 pitches (46 for strikes), only one batter faced a three ball count, and he threw 13 of 15 first pitch strikes. "A truly memorable performance," said Bergholtz. Biddle's day was done after 5 innings so that per league pitching restrictions he could be eligible to pitch in Saturday's championship game. Jay Query finished off the victory pitching the final two innings.

The GFS Tigers will look to capture their 7th consecutive FSL Championship this Saturday when they host Shipley. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Gratwick Field (on the GFS Playing Fields at 2823 Midvale Avenue).
