A Cappella

GFS A Cappella is the Upper School's coed close-harmony group.  Founded by GFS teacher David Buffum in 1995, and directed by GFS part-time faculty Allen Drew since the fall of 2002, the group has been featured on WFLN's "Notes From Philadelphia” as well as NBC 10’s 10! Show, and has performed in Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Eastern Canada, China, as well as the greater Philadelphia region.

Their recording of  "Land of Confusion" was selected for the 2002 Best of High School A Cappella CD (BOHSA), and their 2001 release, "The Best of GFS A Cappella,1995-2002," has been met with critical acclaim. Their 2002 release,“440,” also received praise from the critics, and its recording of U2’s“Pride” was selected for the BOHSA 2003 CD. Their 2005 release, "Soup," had its rendition of Dido's "Here With Me" (soloist Claire Fuller) chosen for the BOHSA 2005 compilation.  Their album, "When Hairy Met Sushi," had its version of "I Was a Fool" (soloist Jack Meigs) selected for the BOHSA 2007 compilation.  And their recent album, "Vinyl," had its recording of "I Used to Love Him" (soloist Bouyeh Zulu) chosen for the BOHSA 2009 CD.  In addition to this, the song "The Final Countdown" (soloist Holly Stewart) was one of the 5 nominees for the 2010 CASA (Contemporary A Cappella Society) award for best high school song, and the album as a whole was one of the nominees for best high school album.
 

The group is currently working on a new album, which they hope to release in February of 2011. GFS A Cappella continues to distinguish itself by learning difficult arrangements and exploring a wide variety of musical genres.
