Instrumental Music is alive and flourishing at GFS under the leadership of our orchestra director, Danielle Garrett.
Lower School
The GFS Orchestra program begins in our Lower School under the direction of Taia Harlos. This fine young group introduces students to the fun and challenges of playing in the orchestral setting. Members meet once a week after school, and play age appropriate repertoire that teaches them invaluable ensemble skills, as well as community building tools.
Middle School
Students graduate into the Middle School Orchestra (grades 6-8) where they continue fine tuning their ensemble skills (proper intonation, balance, tone, etc.) in a more advanced environment. Students of all levels have fun in a supportive atmosphere while maintaining the highest standards. Members rehearse for 45 minutes twice a week during the school day. The Middle School Orchestra is featured on several school assemblies (throughout the year) and a final Instrumental Extravaganza in May.
Upper School
The Upper School Orchestra is open to all students in grades 9-12 who play any standard orchestral instrument. Students in the orchestra rehearse 3 times a week during the school day and perform on several school assemblies and full nighttime concerts. Repertoire is drawn from both educational arrangements and original (non-transcribed) music. Due to appropriate balance, pianists are requested to audition.
