Some of you may already have begun receiving college literature. Sorting through the avalanche of brochures, view books, pamphlets, and catalogs can be overwhelming. Much of it is promotional in nature. It might be helpful to start from the other side, that is: What is it that YOU want from your college experience? Make a list. What kind of atmosphere do you seek: Small liberal arts college or large university? Urban, suburban, or rural? Local or as far away as possible? A multi-racial student body? Coed or single sex?At this time, many of you are unclear about what you wish to pursue as a major, while some of you may be absolutely certain.
Check the college catalog. College catalogs generally use antiseptic and impersonal prose, making for less than engaging reading. As it is a contract between school and student, most of the contents can be taken at face value. You will be able to determine course offerings, academic and graduation requirements, faculty qualifications and special programs. Review this document. Are there enough course offerings to satisfy you over your four years? Much of this information can be obtained by viewing the college website. In addition, the College Board and Petersons have websites with a wealth of information. College Navigator is a really useful tool to find graduation rates, retention rates by gender, race and ethnicity.
Information can also be gathered by talking with the college representatives who visit GFS. Visitors will be listed in the daily bulletin, posted on the college bulletin board, and on the college information folder on GFS email. Attending these sessions is a good way to talk (in an informal setting), get specific questions answered, and make yourself known to the regional admissions officer. Please remember that you must ask your teacher at least two days before the session if you may miss class to attend! To enable parents to attend, these representatives will usually also give evening presentations at a local hotel or school.
