About GFS >Germantown Avenue Construction >

With the completion of the PennDOT construction adjacent to the GFS campus, access from Germantown Avenue has been restored.  We encourage you to continue to be patient and safe as you drive or walk in our school zone.

Please remember that it is now illegal in Philadelphia to use a cellphone while operating a motor vehicle.  This law applies to the GFS campus as well as the surrounding streets.

Visitors and parents are advised to:

Use Schoolhouse Lane to drop off and pick up children when possible although the Coulter St. drop-off is also available.

Proceed cautiously down Coulter Street.  Enter campus from the Meetinghouse driveway closest to Germantown Ave., and exit campus from the driveway closest to Greene Street back onto Coulter Street.

Use extreme caution around school crossings on Coulter Street.  Students and visitors may be walking on campus at any time.  Your safety is our first concern.

Visit this page of the website for updates from PennDOT until this major project concludes in January 2010.

PennDOT to Reopen Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia Wednesday as $9.2 Million Improvement Project Nears Completion
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that Germantown Avenue will reopen tomorrow (Nov. 25) at noon between Queen Lane and Coulter Street in the Germantown section of Philadelphia as construction nears completion on the $9.2 million project to rebuild over 2,000 feet of the avenue between Ashmead Street and Church Lane, and between East High Street and West Walnut Lane.

The block between Queen Lane and Coulter Street was the final portion of Germantown Avenue to be rebuilt by PennDOT as part of this improvement project that began construction on Feb. 17, 2009. PennDOT said crews will continue to work along Germantown Avenue over the next few weeks to finish sidewalk replacements, install new street lights and overhead trolley wires, but these operations will have little to no impact on traffic flow. All work on the project is scheduled to be completed by Jan. 15, 2010, but PennDOT expects the work to be done by mid-December, weather permitting.

Over the past nine months, PennDOT’s contractor built a new concrete roadway with new trolley tracks; installed new granite curbing and granite block shoulders; built new sidewalks; installed new decorative street lights and trees; and replaced old underground water and sewer pipes. Block-by-block closures of Germantown Avenue have been in place since March 2009 for reconstruction activity.

Seravalli Inc. of Philadelphia, Pa. is the general contractor on the $9,220,000 project that is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds. This improvement project is phase two of PennDOT’s two-phase program to rebuild and restore two deteriorated sections of Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia. Last year, PennDOT rebuilt Germantown Avenue between Allens Lane and Mermaid Lane in Mount Airy under a $17 million project.

PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions on major highways before heading out. For more PennDOT information, visit www.dot.state.pa.us. Media contact: Gene Blaum, Assistant Press Secretary, 610-205-6800

PennDOT has announced its plans to begin the major rebuilding of five blocks of Germantown Avenue, from Ashmead to Church Lane, plus East High Street to Walnut Lane.  This massive project began February 17 and is scheduled to finish in January 2010.  This work will occur weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The benefit of this huge project will be brighter, safer and more beautiful stretches of Germantown Avenue.  These sections of the Avenue will boast: new sidewalks; new decorative street lights and trees; new granite curbing and shoulders; a new concrete roadway with new trolley tracks; and the replacement of old underground water and sewer pipes.

During the first two months, according to PennDOT, motorists will face traffic pattern shifts, possible lane closures, and short-term parking restrictions.  Pedestrians are expected to have access to sidewalks throughout the project.

PennDOT will work on the block adjacent to GFS between June 15 and August 31 to avoid impacting access to the school while in session.  This will, however, mean that the block will be closed for the removal of the existing roadbed and the reconstruction of the avenue.  Detours will be posted to move through traffic around the closure.  (The block near Germantown High School, between East High Street and West Walnut Lane, will be affected during the summer for the same reason.)

This is the second of PennDOT’s two-phase program to rebuild sections of Germantown Avenue.  The first phase resulted in the improvements between Allens Lane and Mermaid Lane.

We expect to receive regular updates from PennDOT and will post them here.
