All camp instructors, many of whom are GFS faculty and staff, are skilled professionals who are experts in their respective fields; their primary goal is to help campers grow as athletes, artists, scientists and individuals. Moreover, since Germantown Friends School is rooted in the Quaker values of community and equality, Summertime at GFS is open to students from throughout the Delaware Valley. To accommodate parents’ hectic schedules, we offer transportation, lunches and extended-day options as well.

Summertime at GFS will take place on the school’s main campus and at its 14-acre athletic fields. The main campus features three theatres, four gymnasiums, numerous art and music studios, computer labs, the LEED-certified Wade Science Center, teaching gardens, and wooded areas for outdoor education and play.

Please note: Grades listed refer to your child’s current grade as of spring 2016.

Under the direction of GFS sixth-grade lead teacher La Toya Miller, the Explorers Day Camp offers five weeks of old-fashioned summertime fun. The program is designed to develop campers’ curiosity and creativity through play and discovery. Weekly session themes and half-day field trips to local community and cultural sites provide opportunities for experiential learning and adventure.

Campers can register for either a full or half day, and should pack a swimsuit for water play.

Explorers Day Camp is divided into three groups:

Pioneers (for preschool students ages 3–5)

Summer-camp fun meets school readiness for our youngest campers, who will learn new skills through theme-related art, cooking and science projects; creative and cooperative play; imaginative dramatic games; cooking; and water activities. Session themes will emphasize literacy, mathematical reasoning and scientific methods.

Adventurers (Kindergarten–grade 2)

Trailblazers (grades 3–4)

Programs for our primary-school aged campers are designed to offer a summer of fun in five theme-oriented sessions. The GFS campus serves as base camp for exploration with field trips providing opportunities for hands-on learning and discovery. Games, arts, cooking, science and water play are integrated into each theme week, as campers build confidence and skills, forge new friendships and navigate new experiences within
a secure and nurturing environment.

Explorers Day Camp themes (and special end-of-the-week events) include:

Mad Science (The Science Guy)
Time Travel in Germantown (A Country Fair)
Under the Sea (Aloha Water Carnival)
A Walk on the Wildside (Safari Scavenger Hunt)
Ready, Set, Rio (Olympics 2016)
