On November 18, 2011, the student-run newspaper, Earthquake, sponsored its second Philadelphia High School Journalism Conference. Over 100 student writers and editors from Philadelphia-area schools were welcomed on campus to hear keynote speaker Emily Bazelon ’89, Senior Editor of Slate.com, PJ Vogt ’04, from NPR's On the Media, Rebecca Traister ’93, and senior writer at Salon and author of a recent book on the 2008 presidential campaign.
“Journalism is taking off in new forms and many students want to write for publication—on-line and in blogs,” says Anne Gerbner, faculty advisor for Earthquake. "This conference will focus on new and alternative media and include sessions about writing well. Student journalists will have a round table discussion about their common concerns: ethics, the future of news, and online publishing."
The first conference in 2010 was attended by 80 students from 13 different schools who heard Buzz Bissinger, author of Friday Night Lights, speak.
