This year’s Cohen Art Lecture in February featured renowned Philadelphia urban photographer Zoe Strauss. Her presentation coincided with the exhibit, “Zoe Strauss: Ten Years,” which opened at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in January. Strauss is known for her portraits of marginal neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Her photographs lovingly and respectfully document the grit of urban life. She annually exhibits her work under a stretch of I-95 in South Philly, taking it out of the haughty, exclusive confines of the gallery and museum and bringing it to the people and places she makes her subjects.
Strauss has been known to give her work away rather than sell it for thousands of dollars.
