As part of our study, first graders visited two farms, Wyck Home Farm and Weaver's Way Farm, both of which sell food to people in the city. At Weaver's Way, the students harvested salad greens and learned how to plant garlic. Then they transported the food they picked to the Weaver's Way Co-Op to be sold, just like the farmers do every day.
At Wyck, the students played a game to help them think about where things come from. At the end of the game, they figured out that everything, even our clothes and our cars, come from a farm or the natural world.
The first graders were surprised that farmers do not look the way they do in books, and neither did the farms. These were just some of the surprises they encountered on their visits to the city farms.
