Several times a year, Middle School students meet by grade for Meeting for Business. Each class selects a group of representatives who run the meeting according to the tenets of Quaker decision-making.
The students discuss problems in the Middle School, as well as plan activities such as dances, spirit weeks and fundraisers. In reaching a group decision, students learn to argue for their own point of view and to listen carefully to the opinions of their peers. They learn how to be open to receiving God’s message and willing to be persuaded to change their mind in order to reach unity with the entire group. Although the Quaker process can sometimes be more time consuming than the process of voting, community is built as a result of listening to the views of others and exploring creative ideas when problem solving.
