Breakthrough Scholars Imagining the Future

Breakthrough Scholars Imagining the Future

Eighth grade scholars in GFS’ Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia program recently collaborated on a design thinking project centered on civic imagination and community change. Together, they explored what Philadelphia would look like in 50 years if it were shaped by care, connection, and community.

The immersive, hands-on work paired them with advisors and graduate students from DesignPhiladelphia and the University of Pennsylvania's Weitzman School of Design as part of a public exhibition and programming series planned for Philadelphia's 250th anniversary celebrations.

Through nine weeks of drawing, mapping, storytelling, and model-making, students reflected on their lived experiences, explored their neighborhoods, and worked both individually and collaboratively to envision bold new possibilities for our city. They learned that their voices, perspectives, and creativity matter in building a more just and joyful future for all.

Next summer, the students’ work will be featured in a public exhibition. Stay tuned for details.
