Early Childhood Snack Shop

“If crackers and fruit snacks are both $2, how much money do you need to buy both?”

Take a peek inside one of our PreK classrooms during “Snack Shop,” an interactive (and delicious!) weekly lesson that turns snack time into a hands-on math adventure. Students start by “withdrawing” five Unifix cubes from a classroom ATM, which they then use to purchase snacks with prices displayed as dots, numbers, or five-frames.

Through this lesson, students begin mastering early math concepts, such as one-to-one counting and basic subtraction. Beyond math, the shop teaches real-world skills—including how to wait your turn in line and use manners. The students even participate in a classroom democracy, holding a primary and general election to vote on their shop's name!
