Triple Crown for Spring Sports: Girls Track & Field, Boys Tennis, and Lacrosse Win FSL Champions
It was an exciting spring in GFS Upper School Athletics! Here are a few highlights from the season:

Girls Track & Field

The Girls Track & Field team left the Friends Schools League (FSL) Championship meet at Westtown with some new hardware to add to their collection. The Girls scored 163 points and finished first, for their fourth consecutive FSL title and the program’s 20th overall.

Emi Wong Shing '27 (pictured above, left) put the team on her back, competing in four final events. Wong Shing finished in the top three in all four of the events, including winning the Triple Jump with a jump of 35-0. In the 100m dash, Wong Shing set a new school record, running 12.47s.

In the sprints, Wong Shing was joined by Samantha Sims-Pettiford '28, who finished in fifth place in the 100m and 200m finals. In the distance events, the Tigers’ usual suspects scored points for the team: Zoe Lallas '26, Jane Keenan '25, and Eliza Dunsay '28 finished in third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in the 800m finals. Lallas, Ani Rubenstein '28, and Dunsay also ran the 1600m and swept the second through fourth positions.

The Tigers truly secured their victory in the field events. Alayah Campbell '25 (pictured above) won the High Jump, jumping 5-2, a full eight inches higher than the next best jumper. Teammate Keenan finished in second place. Campbell also jumped ahead of the pack in the Long Jump, winning by a much narrower margin, half an inch, at 16-7.5, to secure first place.

Zahara Brown '26 finished on the podium in third place, in both the Discus and Shot Put, throwing 97-8 and 36-7, respectively. Junior Ellie McGrath set a personal best in the Javelin and won the event for the Tigers, throwing an impressive 94-7.

JV Highlights: The Tigers are proud to support a robust Junior Varsity Track Team. Jada Wells '27, Jordan Abney '26, Zoe Kyriakakis '28, and Isha Naik '26 all finished in the top ten in the JV 100m dash. In the JV 400m Dash, the Tigers swept the top six spots with Kyriakakis, Wells, and Abney claiming the top three spots respectively. Avianna Monchais '28 finished third in the 300m hurdles. Keenan and Lucy Gerber '25 tied for second place in the Girls Pole Vault.

Boys Track & Field

The Boys Track & Field team finished in third place at the FSL Championship meet.

Highlights:

  • Declan Head '27 finished in second place in the 1600m run, and third in the 3200m.
  • The Varsity 4x100 relay finished in second place, less than one second behind the first place team.
  • Senior Ben Idinopolus finished in second place in the High Jump and the Pole Vault
  • Gabriel Baah '26 earned second place in the Triple Jump, jumping 39-9.5m, missing first place by only half an inch

Lacrosse

Germantown Friends continued its dominance in Friends Schools League girls lacrosse, defeating Shipley 11-8 on Tuesday to claim a fifth consecutive championship and 24th in program history.

The Shipley Gators struck first and went up 2-0 in the first quarter, GFS responded with a 3-0 run thanks to goals by junior attacker Olivia Lutey (pictured below), midfielder Sarah Goldberg '26, and defender Grace Chaisson '28, and never looked back.

The Gators did their best to weather the storm, but the Tigers’ offense was attacking from all angles– nine of the Tigers’ eleven goals were assisted and six different players scored. The Tigers held off a late push by Shipley and sealed the win with clutch play from like defender and co-captain Riya Mainigi '25 and senior attacker Anna Pendse.

Lutey led the Tigers with four goals, with her classmates Goldberg and Emmie Day '26 contributing all over the midfield. In a close game, when possession of the ball is critical, the Tigers defense was able to keep the momentum in GFS’ favor, coming up with six caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Caterina Rogers '27 held it down between the pipes, finishing with 11 saves.

Highlights by the numbers:

  • Olivia Lutey '26: 4 goals, 2 assists, 4 draw controls, 3 groundballs
  • Sarah Goldberg '26: 2g, 1a, 2dc, 2gb
  • Anna Pendse '25: 2g
  • Katie Day '25: 2a, 1 caused turnover
  • Emmie Day '26: 3a, 1dc, 3gb, 2cto
  • Claire Rigdon '25: 1g, 1a, 1gb

Boys Tennis

The Varsity Boys Tennis squad is back on top of the Friends Schools League. The team won the thriller of a championship match against the Shipley School, 3-2. This is the team’s seventh FSL title since 2017.

Earlier in the season, The Tigers and the Gators met on the court and GFS came away with a 4-1 victory, but one of the Tigers’ wins came from a Shipley forfeit in the No. 1 Singles spot, so a match-up with the full strength of both squads was highly anticipated.

The championship did not disappoint. GFS and Shipley split the singles matches. Trevor Zuercher '25 secured a convincing 6–1, 6–4 win at No. 2 singles, while Shipley took the points at No. 1 and No. 3.

The Tigers also picked up a dominant 6–1, 6–1 win at No. 1 doubles from Joseph Helfrich '25 and Benedict Tessler '25. With the overall score tied 2–2, the title came down to No. 2 doubles, where Jack Abend '27 (pictured above) and Kevin Li '26 battled through a tense three-setter to defeat Oliver Kourula and Rhys Makai, 4–6, 6–4, 6–4, clinching the championship for GFS.

Scores:

  • No. 1 Singles: Henry Mather '29 vs. Brody Ladda 6-3; 4-6; 3-6 (Shipley)
  • No. 2 Trevor Zuercher '25 vs. Leo Sun 6-1; 6-4 (GFS)
  • No. 3 Sam Bekelman '25 vs. Anderson Knipe 2-6; 1-6 (Shipley)
  • No. 1 Doubles: Joseph Helfrich '25 and Benedict Tessler '25 vs. Paul Mattis and Keith Duncan 6-1; 6-1 (GFS)
  • No. 2 Jack Abend '27 and Kevin Li '26 vs. Oliver Kourula and Rhys Makai 4-6; 6-4; 6-4 (GFS)
