Into the Cage: GFS Tigers Leave Their Mark at Yale

The GFS Tigers track and field team delivered a memorable weekend performance at the Yale Winter Track Classic, competing against strong fields inside Yale University’s historic Coxe Cage. Making the most of an overnight trip and the championship atmosphere, the Tigers rose to the occasion with event wins, podium finishes, and standout individual efforts.

Leading the way was Zahara Brown ’26 (pictured), who dominated the girls shot put with authority. Brown uncorked a winning throw of 41 feet, 5 inches, securing first place by a wide margin. The runner-up finished more than four feet back at 36 feet, 9.25 inches, underscoring just how decisive Brown’s victory was. Her performance not only earned gold but also set the tone for a weekend defined by confidence and competitive poise.

On the boys’ side, the Tigers showcased both depth and resilience, particularly in the distance events. The boys distance medley relay, featuring Charlie Berk ’27, Kiran Ebanks ’28, Samuel Kelly ’26, and Declan Head ’27, claimed first place in one of the most exciting races of the meet. In a tightly contested finish, three teams crossed the line separated by less than 1.6 seconds, with GFS emerging on top through smart pacing and a determined final leg. The momentum continued in the boys 4x800-meter relay, where Berk, Kelly, Head, and Liam Riley ’26 combined for a strong third-place finish.

Individually, Head added another highlight by placing fourth in the mile, running an impressive 4:27.68. Racing on one of the Northeast’s premier indoor tracks, Head demonstrated composure and tactical awareness, staying in contention throughout a fast-paced field and closing strong.

Beyond the results, the Yale Winter Track Classic offered valuable experience for the Tigers; traveling together, staying overnight, and competing in a collegiate environment against elite competition. The weekend served as both a measuring stick and a confidence booster as the season progresses.

With championship-caliber performances, thrilling finishes, and success on a storied collegiate stage, the GFS Tigers left New Haven having made a clear statement: they are ready to compete with anyone, anywhere.
