Earthquake, the Germantown Friends Upper School student newsmagazine, was one of 24 print publications, selected from more than 1,190 submissions, to earn a Gold Medal and a Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA's members, and are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence in design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. The awards honor publications published during the 2015-16 academic year.
Each year, Crown judges select examples from the winning publications, and, together with written comments, create a DVD of these examples to share with CSPA member schools. The judges chose the following Earthquake articles for this year's DVD, which was distributed to students at the Columbia High School Journalism Conference at Columbia University in March 2017 (which nine of our current Earthquake staff members attended, along with two faculty advisors):
"Big Man on Campus" (June 2015)
"Calling for Help" (cover, February 2016)
"The Writings on the Wall" (February 2016)
"Planning the Next Decade" (June 2016)
Congratulations to our student journalists on these amazing achievements!
