explore our CAMPUS

What's cool about our campus is that it's spread out over seven acres in Philadelphia's historic neighborhood of Germantown. The buildings are an eclectic mix of old and new, a unique look and feel more consistent with a college campus. With three gyms, three auditoriums, a student center, numerous open, green spaces and nine classroom buildings, it's a place worthy of adoration and exploration. The Meetinghouse, at the center of it all, provides a beautiful and spiritual focal point.

The Pillars of A

Quaker Education

At GFS, students and teachers gather in Meeting for Worship once each week. This is a time for shared, silent contemplation. Anyone who feels moved to speak may rise and do so. It is a simple formula, and can be a remarkably powerful experience. In these days of constant connectivity, the ability and opportunity to sit in silence have special value. Meeting for Worship is a cornerstone of the GFS culture that many come to cherish throughout their lives.

Germantown Friends School to Open a Center City Location for its Early Childhood Program

PHILADELPHIA, PA, JUNE 23, 2017 - Germantown Friends School, located in the Germantown neighborhood of Northwest Philadelphia, is pleased to announce its plans to open a second location for its Early Childhood Program in Center City. The GFS Early Childhood Program is a strong and well differentiated program in the Philadelphia area, both in its curricular offerings and Quaker underpinnings.

For a number of years, the school has examined ways to build upon the strength of the existing early childhood program and address a need identified in Center City, where a significant number of parents have chosen to enroll their children in the programs that are closest to home rather than commuting even the relatively short distance to Germantown. As the population grows in Center City, many parents are facing waitlists at the schools of their choice.

"This program is a wonderful extension of the GFS mission and a treasured opportunity to engage the hearts and minds of our youngest friends," says Head of School Dana Weeks. "We are excited to be able to offer this option to our growing Center City contingent and thrilled to be expanding the GFS community."

GFS has leased a beautiful, light-filled space in The Curtis Center at the corner of 6th and Walnut Streets on Washington Square, which is being renovated this summer and will be outfitted with Reggio-inspired natural materials and furnishings. The location will feature three classrooms, a movement studio for interactive play, and a dedicated area for art and science.

"We are fortunate to count on experienced and caring teachers, who are engaged in GFS's professional learning community and building on a 170-year tradition of excellence in education," says Early Childhood Program Director Sarah McMenamin. "They are deeply dedicated to our students and their families."

Early Childhood Program Launches in Center CityThis new program is accepting applications for preschool-aged children and will welcome the first class of young people to this location in fall 2017.
