explore our CAMPUS

What's cool about our campus is that it's spread out over seven acres in Philadelphia's historic neighborhood of Germantown. The buildings are an eclectic mix of old and new, a unique look and feel more consistent with a college campus. With three gyms, three auditoriums, a student center, numerous open, green spaces and nine classroom buildings, it's a place worthy of adoration and exploration. The Meetinghouse, at the center of it all, provides a beautiful and spiritual focal point.

The Pillars of A

Quaker Education

At GFS, students and teachers gather in Meeting for Worship once each week. This is a time for shared, silent contemplation. Anyone who feels moved to speak may rise and do so. It is a simple formula, and can be a remarkably powerful experience. In these days of constant connectivity, the ability and opportunity to sit in silence have special value. Meeting for Worship is a cornerstone of the GFS culture that many come to cherish throughout their lives.

Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Honor GFS Talent
Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Honor GFS Talent

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards honored many of our talented writers and artists. GFS students in grades seven through twelve submitted works, and we had numerous regional winners within the Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention rankings. Thirty-seven written works and twenty-six visual works (listed in the charts below) were selected.

Megan Culp, chair of the Art Department, said, "We are so excited to see a growing number of our students submitting to Scholastic and being recognized for their impressive work in visual art."

"GFS is a school of writers, and I am thrilled to see how many students were acknowledged for their work," added Alex Levin, chair of the English Department.

On March 24, English teachers June Gondi and Alex Levin joined six of the nine GFS Scholastic Gold Key writing award winners at the Philadelphia award ceremony. (See the photo above.) Three of these students also received National Awards for their writing, which will be presented at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 7.

Here's the explanation from Scholastic about the regional award rankings:

Gold Key
The very best works submitted to local programs. Gold Key works are automatically considered for national–level recognition.

Silver Key
Stand-out works submitted to local programs that demonstrate exceptional ability.

Honorable Mention
Accomplished works submitted to local programs showing great skill and potential.
