This year on Giving Tuesday, GFS' Parents Association sponsored a holiday volunteer opportunity.
Giving Tuesday has become a wonderful opportunity for individuals to come together in support of change and hope, with thousands of individuals are contributing to fundraisers, donating goods, or volunteering their time to help others. This year on Giving Tuesday, Germantown Friends School's (GFS) Parents Association (PA) sponsored a holiday volunteer opportunity at Cradles to Crayons, an organization provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive.
Thirty-five parents, faculty, and staff joined together to sort through winter coat donations for children. Parents and colleagues from all divisions checked for garment quality and sorted clothing and coats into bins categorized by age. Their efforts resulted in the creation of 800 clothing bags, which will be delivered this week.
"It was so nice to see parents, faculty and staff come together to support such an important organization in our local community," said PA Chair Nancy Katz. "The overwhelming feedback told us that we need to do more community engagement events."
Parents Molly Murphy (mom of Hugh '23 and Claire '25 Rigdon) and Mark O'Donnell (dad of Alexandra and Kylie '21 Delaplane) were immensely helpful in the organization of this event. A special thank you to faculty and staff members Meg Cohen Ragas, Kathy Paulmier, Felicia Caviezel, Taia Harlos, and Jeff Fetterman for their support.
"The new Cradles to Crayons warehouse is amazing!" noted GFS Director of Community Involvement Kathy Paulmier. "I was really impressed and inspired by the whole operation, the three-level sorting system, the care they give to each item, and the tender emphasis on what children need today. Nancy and her team organized a terrific evening, and we had a great turn out. I hope it's the beginning of a new GFS tradition!"
Leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, you can prepare items to support the Parents Association's community-wide clothing, book, and toy drive for Cradles to Crayons. Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming drive, as well as details on another community service event coming this spring!
