Debra Stevens joined the Middle School Tennis program this fall as an assistant coach and also serves as the Recruitment Manager at Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia, a program of GFS. Stevens brings collegiate tennis playing experience and enthusiasm to the position and has been instrumental in the Middle School Tennis team’s undefeated record to date.
Like the athletes she coaches, Steven’s participation in the game began with her middle school team; she was also a member of the volleyball and basketball teams. At William Penn High School, Stevens was the number two Varsity singles player and earned All-Public honors. “I remember how exciting it was to see my name in the Daily News sports section for high school students!” shared Stevens. She was also an active player in the National Junior Tennis League in Philadelphia.
Stevens continued her tennis career as a member of the NCAA Spelman College Women’s Tennis team. She later earned her bachelor's degree from Saint Joseph’s University.
“My high school tennis coach at William Penn High School was responsible for my love of tennis and also refining my fundamentals,” said Stevens. “It’s wonderful to be back in the game, teaching skills, and inspiring young players to find their passion.”
