July 18, 2020
Today we mourn the loss of two great leaders and activists who lifted their voices and acted their conscience in the name of Civil Rights, equity, and anti-racism: John Lewis and Reverend C.T. Vivian. We are called to honor their work through our own.
It is in this spirit that I thank the 500 alumni, parents, faculty, and staff for joining our Actions for Equity Community Conversations over the past two weeks. This is a clear indicator of our unity in moving this work forward and creating significant change. The reflections and ideas shared by our community are critical as we update and prioritize our working plan.
Our conversations continue in the coming week, and we are pleased to share that there will be an additional session for alumni who were unable to attend last week's conversations. As well, additional opportunities for our community to gather (online or in-person if permitted) will be scheduled later this summer or early fall, at various times and with various groups. The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will also hold continual dialogues throughout the year.
We will share themes and input from the sessions soon via email and on our Actions for Equity webpage, as well as additional steps to bring a comprehensive plan to life, including a timeline, metrics, accountability tools - just to name a few.
For those of you who are planning to join this afternoon's forum organized by BlackatGFS, I send you love and Light. I hope that the session allows voices to be heard and that we can use those discussions to guide our plans for a more inclusive and welcoming GFS. I have reached out to the organizers and have extended an open invitation to talk about how we can work together.
I look forward to continued momentum and am buoyed by the spirit of unity demonstrated by the GFS community in the past month. I remain committed to moving forward with openness, care, and urgency.
