History

Germantown Community Basketball Tournament

Since 1989, the annual Germantown Community Tournament has focused on benefiting the Germantown community, bringing together high school students from Philadelphia-area schools. The selection of participating teams provides an opportunity for exciting out-of-league match-ups whose schedules would never otherwise intersect.

The tournament also celebrates the GFS Community Basketball and Enrichment Camp. Proceeds from the tournament benefit camp, which was started in 1971 by former GFS principal David Felsen. The summer program, formerly known as the Germantown Basketball, Reading, & Computer Clinic, provides an opportunity for children from the Germantown community to develop their skills on the court and in the classroom. This year, in honor of our Community Service Award winners, St. Luke's Church and Food Pantry, we are asking for donations of new or lightly used basketball sneakers.

Felsen Cup

The Felsen Cup is a friendly athletic competition between Germantown Friends School and Friends’ Central School. The cup is awarded annually to the school which wins the majority of the regular season boys and girls varsity contests. The cup is named in honor of David M. Felsen, who taught, coached, and was an administrator at Germantown Friends School from 1966-1988 and Head of Friends’ Central School from 1988 to 2011.
