For the first time in 38 years, GFS Wrestling dethroned the defending Friends Schools League Champions, Westtown School.
Last week, the Tigers traveled to West Chester to face off with the Moose on the mat. The Tigers forfeited the first three weight classes, putting them in the hole 0-18, but senior standout Theo Molot sparked the Tigers' comeback.
Molot pinned his opponent in under a minute to put the Tigers on the board 6-18. Nate Gearhart-Robboy ’28 and Guilia Di Benedetto ’28 each added points via forfeits. Entering the final three weight classes, the Tigers were down 18-33.
Simone Leapheart ’26 pinned her opponent in a stunning fourteen seconds, putting the Tigers within reach, 24-33. Owen Mather ’25 took down Westtown wrestler Jack Freeman and narrowed the deficit to just three points with one Tiger left to wrestle: Hezekiah Peterkin ’27 (pictured right).
Peterkin had the longest match of the afternoon, but pinned his opponent and gave GFS a 36-33 edge over Westtown ending the almost 40-year head-to-head winning streak by the Moose.
Westtown and Germantown Friends Wrestling have been competing against each other long before the FSL playoff format was created in 2004. This is the first time the Moose have not been in the top four teams, and will not vie for a championship leaving the door open for GFS, ANC, AFS, and George School to be championship contenders.
The Tigers will compete in the Semi-Finals/Championship Meet on Friday, February 6th at the Academy of the New Church.
