Tigers' Upper School Weekly Scoreboard: Week of Nov. 28- Dec. 3

Highlights: Varsity Wrestling beat SCH for the first time in at least a decade. Varsity Boys and Girls Squash started strong with on-the-road wins. Boys Basketball's Jordan Dill '26 recorded 87 points in the team's first three games.

Varsity Wrestling (1-0) hosted and won its season-opener against Springside Chestnut Hill last week, 60-24. The match kicked off with Theo Molot '25 getting a first period takedown. Later in the match, Molot took control on top, turned his opponent, and recorded a pin to win the match.

"This is the first time in seven years of coaching here that the GFS Tigers had every weight class filled and it sure did count! In the sport of wrestling, the first victory is always weighing in on weight. The next is the battle within the battle. I don't remember the last time GFS beat SCH but I do think it's been at least 12 years. It felt good to start the season 1-0 but there is more to build on. I can't wait to see were this team can go," said Head Coach Paul Hammond.

At the meet supporting the Tigers were eight athletes from the Germantown Grapplers, a youth wrestling team. "It was really cool for the youth to have this experience," added Coach Hammond.

Varsity Girls Squash (1-0) defeated Harriton High School 5-2. Claire Rigdon ‘25 was a key performer with a dominant 3-0 win, claiming the last game without dropping a point, 11-0. Maddie Daniel ‘24 went 2-0 up before her opponent gained momentum to bring it back 2-2. Maddie stayed mentally tough in the 5th, putting in a dominant performance to win the 5th game 11-5. Persi Coes ‘25 had a challenging first game, but fought came back from 1-0 down, defeating her opponent 3-1.

"I am really happy with the team for their performances today; a 5-2 win is a strong start to the season and the depth of our team really showed. Considering our #2 was out due to injury, resulting in everyone moving up a spot on the roster, the team showed up for each other and gave 100%,  which paid off. This result should give the team confidence going into what is expected to be a close match with Agnes Irwin JV next week (12/6)," said Head Coach Lauren West.

Varsity Boys Squash (1-0) had a strong performance beating SquashSmarts 6-1, with four of the five matches being won in a shutout (3-0). "The match was a great start to our season. We were excited to play SquashSmarts at the NTC (national training center) where the best players in the US base themselves. We were happy to get our season off to a winning start," said Head Coach Stuart George.

Varsity Indoor Track ran in their first meet of the season, the Ursinus Opener on Saturday, held at Ursinus College. Highlights include: Zahara Brown '26 took 6th in the Girls Shot Put ; Graham Greene '23 placed 7th in the boys 55 Meter Dash; and Jasper Mosley '24 placed 9th in the Boys One Mile.

Varsity Boys Basketball (0-3) has played three this season, all against formidable opponents in preparation for Friends Schools League games. The Tigers fell to Springside Chestnut Hill 70-66 in a hard-fought battle. Jordan Dill '26 (pictured) recorded an impressive 27 points, three of which were 3-pointers, and 7 rebounds. Other key players included: Darius Frazier ‘24 (16 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block), Jaden Palmer-Waldron ‘23 (11 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals), and Jesse Mullins ‘24 (10 points (three 3-pointers).

"Our effort today was exceptional and I’m really happy about how hard the guys played today. We didn’t win the game, which we absolutely could have, but if we play each game as hard as we played today, we can look back at this season and say it was a success," said Head Coach Shawn Werdt.

In game two, GFS ell to Penn Charter 69-53 after a stalemate at halftime (21-21). Dill again led the Tigers with 35 points (23 in the second half), 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Palmer-Waldron recorded a team-high 11 rebounds, and also contributed 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.

In game three, GFS lost to Episcopal Academy 68-59. Stat leaders included: Dill (25 points (four 3-pointers), 4 rebounds, 2 steals), Frazier (11 points, 4 rebounds), Naz Tyler ‘27 in his varsity debut (11 points, team high 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block) and Palmer-Waldron (8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, team high 2 blocks, team high 3 steals).

"This was a winnable game that was there for the taking, but we didn’t get stops when we needed them. Naz Tyler played great today. It’s not easy to be an 8th grader playing varsity basketball, but he didn’t flinch at all," added Werdt.

Varsity Girls Basketball (1-1) split a pair of games at the season-opener FSL/Inter Ac Challenge, hosted by Shipley. The Tigers dropped to Lawrenceville Prep 23-32 in the opening game but fought back to win against Christo Rey 52-34. Alayah Campbell ‘25 (14pts) and Taylor Linton ‘28 (15 pts) posted career-highs. Katie Day ‘25 recorded a solid all-around effort (10pts, 6rb, 6ast).  GFS assisted on 17 of 21 baskets, showcasing its already strong teamwork.
