The Tigers eked their way into the Friends Schools League playoff match after a three-way tie for fourth place entering the final week of regular season competition.
As the fourth-place team, the Tigers were tasked with wrestling the hosts and #1 seed, the Academy of the New Church.
The task daunted some of the Tigers who experienced a mid-season rout against the ANC Lions, losing 53-18. The Tigers forfeited five weight classes in the first bout between the big cats. In that first match, seniors Theo Molot and Owen Mather, and up-and-comer Nate Gearhart-Robboy ’28 all earned wins by pinning their opponents.
Entering the FSL Semi-Finals, the Tigers returned a few key contributors from injury including, Connor Torpie-Wheeler ’27 and Maurice Williams ’26.
The revenge tour truly began when Wiley Hayes ’27 put the Tigers on the board with three points, winning by decision 8-4. The Tigers would then go on a 21-point run, winning the next four matches by any and every means necessary, earning a 24-6 advantage. Owen Mather ’25 secured the last win for the blue and orange by pinning his opponent.
The match would end in a dead heat, tied 30-30, and was forced to go to a tie-break. The Tigers were awarded the match-winning point on a sportsmanship infraction by an ANC wrestler. This was the biggest upset at an FSL Wrestling Tournament in 30 years. Senior Theo Molot has remained undefeated for the entirety of the 2024-25 season. Way to go, Tigers!
The Tigers lost the championship match to Abington Friends School and will compete in the Pennsylvania Prep State Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Germantown Academy.
