We welcome you to the Lower School admissions process, and we appreciate your interest in GFS for your child.

At this time, a spot in our waitpool is likely the best outcome of an application to Kindergarten, Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 4 for the 2022-23 school year. Get a head start on your application for the 2023-24 school year by following the steps below.

An important note on 2023-24 Kindergarten Applications:
Due to an unusually large 2022-23 Pre-K class, we will hold an early first round review of Kindergarten applications for 2023-24 for applicant children of current GFS families, alumni, faculty and staff. These families are invited to inquire now. We will open the process to all other families at the end of November for a second round of application review if space remains.

Meet members of our community and hear about the unique educational experiences at GFS by exploring our Admissions event recordings. For questions, please contact us at or 215-951-2345.

Frequently Asked Questions

Initiate Your Application

Provide some basic information, tell us a bit about your interest in GFS.

Once you are in the Admissions Portal, you will see a set of required forms at the top of the application checklist.  Please fill out the following forms by December 10, 2021 to be eligible for first round review for the 2022-23 School Year:

  • Demographic Information — to be completed by a parent or guardian
  • Parent Questionnaire — to be completed by a parent or guardian
  • $45 Application Fee — If this is a hardship please give us a call.

Once these items are completed, you will be able to schedule your Parent Interview.

Schedule Your Parent Interview

Parent interviews are a chance for us to get to know your family!

We will learn about your child, and answer any questions you have about GFS. They typically last about an hour and are conducted via Zoom. If you aren’t familiar with video chat, don’t worry — we’re here to help!

Once you have completed the Demographic Info, Parent Questionnaire and submitted the $45 application fee, we will reach out via email to schedule your virtual parent interview.

For families with multiple applicants, only one Parent Interview is required. If possible, we ask that all parents be present at the same video chat.

In-Person Admissions Testing & Observation Video

For applicants to grades K-5, an in-person academic skills assessment will be conducted by our Admissions Assessment Coordinator. More detailed information on what to expect in terms of our on-campus COVID-19 safety and check-in protocols will be sent upon the appointment confirmation.

The safety of our visitors and staff is our first priority. In the event that individual applicant circumstances do not allow for our preferred in-person assessments, we will accept the following in lieu of the in-person assessment.

Kindergarten through Grade 5 Applicants
We will accept the results from a WPPSI (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence) or a WISC (Wechlser Intelligence Scale for Children), administered within the last calendar year. These are tests that many independent schools use for admissions.

Grades 2-5 Applicants
We will accept the results of an ISEE exam, (Independent School Entrance Examination) by ERB (Educational Record Bureau). The ISEE tests are administered online or through a Prometric location and results can be sent to us directly.

If WPPSI, WISC, or ISEE results are submitted in lieu of the in-person assessment, we will reach out to schedule a brief meet-up via zoom between you, your child, and our Lower School Admissions Director, Lindsay Dussing. This will be a simple and friendly chance for your child to have a conversation about an area of their curiosity, interest, or enjoyment. We suggest your child bring to the meet-up a favorite book or possession that can be shared with Lindsay.

Please email us at or call us at 215-951-2345 if you have any questions on any of the options above.

In addition, we ask that parents submit a short (approximately two minute) video of their child engaged in some sort of interactive activity. Ideally, the clip would show the applicant engaging and speaking with someone else, such as a parent or sibling.

Confidential Teacher Recommendation

We understand the unique demand the current pandemic is placing on teachers during this school year and will work with families to provide flexible options for this requirement. We ask that you please choose the teacher from either last year or this year that knows your child the best.

The Teacher Recommendation form and requests should be sent directly from the Veracross Admissions Portal to the teacher(s) you choose and must be received by GFS by January 7, 2022.

Submit Transcript and School Records

The Transcript Release Form, available in the Veracross Admissions Portal, should be completed by the parent/guardian and returned to the applicant's current school. The student's official academic records must include Fall 2021 grades. Please have your child’s school send the records directly to GFS before January 7, 2022. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are seeing delays in receipt of official academic records, so it’s important that Transcript Request Forms be sent to your child’s school in a timely manner once Fall 2021 grades are available.

A Note on Transcripts and Academic Records

While we require official transcripts as part of our application checklist, we will accept parent provided unofficial transcript copies to expedite file completion. However, an official transcript must be on file in order for any admitted students to enroll.
